sovereign authority stance )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNS:

* Well. That explains why he got exiled, all right.
* This memory is pretty heartwrenching; he gets a deep sense that he loves all these people with all his heart, and now he'll never see them again unless they get exiled too. (Whether this is true or not depends on the next book, but probably not.)
* Anima magic can control people as well as animals; that's why it's banned.
* Coming on the heels of his last memory, he knows he did something deeply taboo. He also knows that the alternative would have been worse for everyone else, so he doesn't regret it.
* He's not pleading for mercy himself; he's pleading for understanding of this new kind of magic. He knows and accepts the price he has to pay, even if it hurts like crazy.
* At least he kept the promise to always remember his friends
* Apparently he's pretty good at what he does even without anima magic.
* +10000 missing his hex
* +200 willing to sacrifice personally if the goal is worthwhile
* -50 concern about taboo
sixelementmudra: (there's what in our basement)
sagacious reading of intent )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* He needs Treinfhir to show him what anima magic looks like to clear him from responsibility for attacks on campus. Probably different attacks given that they found the last attacker dead.
* Apparently what he thought he knew about anima magic is pretty twisted, at least according to the guy who actually knows it. It's not control, it's asking an animal for help and getting it freely or accepting the refusal. It's serious enough that Treinfhir's people execute people who break the taboo.
* Point of cultural commonality: food as hospitality. +10 urge to feed people he likes.
* +50 curiosity about other forms of magic and whether he can learn them.
* +50 desire to investigate things until he learns the truth.

wrathful winds maneuver )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* A really sharp distinction between early Academy memories (rage and emotional repression) and later academy memories (still angry basically all the time, but emotionally healthy and in control of it)
* He gets his name back! Odjin and Calder call him by it a few times.
* The impression that he'd had trouble with his magic for a long time and in a way that might get him killed. Or his hexmates killed.
* The first time he's actually remembered doing really spectacular magic. And this was the first time he'd done it right...
* Sints are powerful but very weird.
* Repression sucks and leads to everything going out of control HEY THIS IS FAMILIAR...
sixelementmudra: (cheerful)
honey-tongued hexmate prana )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* Names: Taban (apparently runs some kind of black market at school), Diantha (another chanter, presumably working with Doc Theo)

* Some more details about hexmates -- Kiwani doesn't know how to deal with failure and gets really upset when it happens, and Calder is terrified of fire. Bayan will know that the scar on his face comes from basically burning it off; something apparently prevented chanters from healing him immediately. He has a plan to deal with this.

* Hexmates should trust each other with their lives. He feels really close to Calder, worries about him, and wants to help him. That extends to everyone in the hex to some extent.

* He's not above a little manipulation to make his hexmates' lives easier, either. He's basically constructing an elaborate metaphor here (the culmination of which is in another memory) that gets Calder past his fear of fire.

* -50 sensitivity to random injury. (Calder almost got his leg ripped off and both boys just shrug it off...)

* +50 desire to help teammates by whatever means necessary

* +50 sensitivity to team dynamics and emotional states

Memory 3: Finding Kiwani's assassin in Bituin's pitchers

Form: crumpled ball of paper, smooth to view (3/4 uses)

inefficient disposal methodology )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* Doc Theo: he remembers liking and trusting the old man, and that he's a healer who works through some kind of song magic.

* He remembers Bituin and that he was familiar and comfortable around giant pitcher plants. The sentiment seems to be generally the same around campus since people are helping feed her, but Bituin is definitely "his" somehow.

* Don't feed people to pitcher plants that is gross. GROSS. He's seriously revolted by the idea that people are an acceptable food for her.

* Other than the gross, they have a serious problem. Someone tried to attack someone he knew -- probably one of his hexmates -- and then someone else killed them after Bayan beat them. And tried to hide the body, and was keeping a close enough eye on it to immediately make it disappear when they found it.

* Another boost in friendship with Calder. Bros.

* +15 urge to seek out the truth.

Skill 1: Duelist Basics

six-element form )
sixelementmudra: (Default)
Form: Pea pod, eat pea for memory, 4/5

aching pen-hand prana )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNS:

* A lot of Waarden history he doesn't care about enough to retain. It'll slip through the mental fingers of anyone else viewing the memory, too, but a few impressions will remain: the Waarden are more defensive than expansionistic, primarily preoccupied with internal strife or external aggression; it has a bureaucratic eunuch class composed mostly of imperial by-blows, the sons of rebels and anyone who wants to trade their future children for a life of wealth and comfort; and at this point in his life, he resents it.

* He gets the three days of form exams before the narrative picks up, so he can at least demonstrate the six sacred motions and some spell-forms.

* Calder is his best friend and apparently went out of his way to be a bro. Bayan cares about him a lot; they show their affection mostly through snark and draping.

* He vaguely remembers that Eward was also his hexmate at some point, and this is a good start. Apparently this is from way earlier than his other memories, especially given that he was using magic freely in one of the others.

* His school is on top of a mountain and in retrospect that's kind of awesome. It has some great views.

* Apparently he changes his mind on a lot of things eventually.

* ugh school ugh exams ugh.

* +15 tendency towards being physically affectionate

* +15 snark
sixelementmudra: (i mad bro)
solid snake style )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNS

* A lot of the basic concepts behind his magic -- the real ones, not the ones the Academy teaches him. A lot of the specifics are going to blur out at this point, but he knows that steel is dangerous and can disrupt his magic and especially his avatars (but his instructors use it to block newniks until they can be trusted to cast safely), that there are at least five methods of making the sacred motions that shape elemental magic other than the one he knows, that savantism (something he knows he does, even if he doesn't get what it is) was once the norm instead of an aberration. He also confirms that yes, he's a Duelist.
* He's furious that everything he was taught was wrong or incomplete, but more furious that someone is using the lost knowledge to threaten his friends and the Empire.
* He doesn't get Tala's name, but he knows she's a friend, from the same country he is, and a powerful Singer. Song magic is still really impressive, but she apparently finds elemental magic just as impressive.
* He knows the basics of how his avatars work, as well as how his elemental spells work.
* +50 smart collaboration, especially with other magic users
* +50 affection for libraries
* +150 determination to find out the truth, whatever it happens to be
sixelementmudra: (sadness)
What it was )

EFFECTS:

* He's exiled and it sucks. He misses his friends and he's really really far away from home; he steps from winter to a hot desert night.
* But it's worth it because his friends are alive and the empire he was defending still stands.
* The woman who transported him looked ragged and bloody. Apparently he succeeded where she failed?
* She tried to commit mass murder to wipe someone's influence away -- and he has the impression that she could've done it. She implies that he didn't have to do that at least...though it raises the question of what he did.
* Her magic is based on song, and it's different from his, though he doesn't have a good idea of what his is yet. He's kind of familiar with it but also intrigued, though that's not really on his mind
* There's a whole world out there full of magic to learn. Maybe there's a bright side to this. And maybe he'll find someone to temper him out there, when he can't do it himself.
* Names: his name and witten Oost's name are blurred out. He learns Calder, Tarin, Kiwani, and given the direction of his thoughts, Eward and Taban also. He also picks up Sint Koos, and a vague idea of what sints are (basically local gods who answer questions)
* He gets a strong impression of the first three (he'll know that he was very close to all of them, but Calder and Kiwani especially) and a much vaguer impression of the last two. No history or real memories attached, but he'd recognize them.
* +100 acceptance of consequences if they lead to something he considers worth it
* +100 willingness to follow through with his choices
* +200 curiosity, particularly about magic

TRIVIA:

This is the very last scene in the canon I have for him, although the third book should be released this year. So for now, this really is the last thing that happened to him.

Name ????// Bayan Lualhati
Age Teenager; seventeen or eighteen, though it's not explicitly stated
Team Heliodor

Height/Build Probably around 5'4", and definitely a martial artist's build -- built up, wiry and tough.
Hair Color/Eye Color Black/Brown
Notable Traits Has a tattoo on the back of his right hand -- six colored teardrops on a black circle, edged with a gold ring. Canon updates may bring more.

For the psychics: Somewhere in his subconscious, Bayan is always always angry, but he has excellent control over it and mastery over it. He's going to be walking around with a certain kind of mental discipline most of the time, that basically uses his anger to focus and clarify his mental state -- it's like zen meditation, but angrier.
Other He's a pretty potent elemental/??? mage if you can sense that kind of thing, but other than that, human.
